The town of Frome in Somerset lies at the edge of the Mendip Hills, a range of limestone hills running between Weston-super-Mare and Frome with its western part designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Frome is on high ground with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Frome grew up around the River Frome and evidence suggests settlement from at least Roman times with a large hoard of Roman coins unearthed nearby. Frome developed with the growth of the wool and cloth industries and later, metal-working and printing too were key industries here.
Frome offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs as well as historic sites and visitor attractions; there are a large number of listed buildings in the centre of Frome and most of it falls within a conservation area. The history of the people and the area can best be discovered at the fascinating Frome Museum that houses a collection of local history and has a particularly important collection of artefacts from the bronze foundry of J.W.Singer.
