Freshwater

Freshwater is a large village at the narrow western end of the Isle of Wight, in the UK. It is situated in Freshwater Bay, which is a small cove on the south coast of the Island, overlooking steep chalk cliffs. This is an interesting and welcoming village that offers a good choice of holiday accommodation and a small but reputable selection of pubs, restaurants and entertainment venues. The hills above Freshwater are named after Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson, who lived at nearby Farringford House, which is now a hotel. There is also a hill in the area called 'Hooke Hill', named for Robert Hooke the physicist who was born here, and a photography museum in the village's Dimbola Lodge, which is the former home of the famous Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, who took the photos of countless celebrities of her era.

Popular attractions on the island include Carisbrooke Castle in Newport, the famous views at The Needles and Alum Bay, the 108 km Isle of Wight Coastal Path, the Blackgang Chine theme park, the Isle of Wight Zoo, and Yarmouth Castle, to name only a few. The Isle of Wight is also a haven for wildlife and sites of geological and natural importance. It is one of the few places in England where the red squirrel is flourishing.
