Fraserburgh

The town and port of Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire, Scotland is a well developed town with its port considered to be the largest shellfish port in Europe; it also sees a considerable trade in white fish. This busy harbour grew in importance from around the 16^th century and has long been a key to the growth and development of Fraserburgh. A local lifeboat has been on service here since 1806 and the first RNLI operated station opened in 1858 and was the first official RNLI station to be opened in Scotland. The Faserburgh Heritage Centre is an excellent place to explore the history and heritage of the town and its people through the ages. Housed in a building that was originally a herring barrel store, the award winning Fraserburgh Heritage Centre opened in 1998.

Fraserburgh is a thriving town offering plenty of amenities, eateries, shops and attractions. From the award winning sandy beach, bustling harbour, fascinating lighthouse museum and the famous Kinnaird Head Lighthouse, Fraserburgh has an excellent choice of things to see, do and enjoy for the visitor. The Kinnaird Lighthouse was formerly Kinnaird Castle, one of ‘The Nine Castles of Knuckle’; built in 1570 by Sir Alexander Fraser, 8th laird of Philorth. It was in 1787 that it was converted and became the first lighthouse in Scotland to be lit by the Commissioners of Northern Lights. The light was designed by Thomas Smith and now forms part of the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses.
