Forres is a town and former royal burgh on the Moray coast, in the far north of Scotland. It is situated around 30 miles to the east of Inverness between the River Findhorn and the woodland valleys of Cluny and the Sanquhar Hills. Forres is known for its award winning floral sculptures and is a popular holiday destination for its beautiful scenery. It has been a winner of the Scotland in Bloom award on several occasions it is a very pleasant base from which to explore the many geographical and historical attractions in the area, such as the River Findhorn, with numerous historical artefacts and monuments to be found within the town itself. One local monument, the Sueno's Stone, is a particularly important historical treasure, as it is an enormous 20 foot high carved stone, believed to have been created by Picts to commemorate a battle against Norse invaders.
Forres is a very ancient settlement that is believed to be the "Varris" shown on maps created by Ptolemy 2,000 years ago. A royal castle was present by at least 900 AD, and was the inspiration for Shakespeare's Duncan's castle in the play Macbeth, with Macbeth's castle being its neighour at Inverness.
