The town of Fordingbridge in the county of Hampshire lies on the River Avon in a picturesque location within the New Forest. The bridge after which the town was named was built around the late 13th century and remains a major feature of the town; beautifully engineered and designed with seven arches. Fordingbridge has been known for smuggling in the past, with tales of the infamous Captain Diamond, the "Smuggler King", having spent considerable time in a local pub. Another controversial figure, the artist Augustus John who lived in Fordingbridge from 1927 until 1961, is honoured with a bronze statue standing proudly on the banks of the river.
Fordingbridge offers visitors more than ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs along with plenty to see, do and enjoy within the area. Lovely walks are available along the Avon Valley Path that passes through the town or by the riverside with its large riverside park, diverse flora and fauna and spectacular views to the elegant bridge. The story of Fordingbridge is best explored at the Fordingbridge Museum, with local history exhibits revealing the life and work of the people of the town; comprising some 9,000 artefacts, including obsolete machinery as well as Cobblers and Blacksmith's tools.
