Folkestone

Folkestone is a large, busy town in the Shepway District of the county of Kent that originally developed through fishing and its close proximity to Continent. A landing place and trading port that really flourished with the coming of the railways; that led to the building of a ferry port. As a seaside resort too, Folkestone proved to be a popular choice. Folkestone now has the only sandy beach that can be reached from London within an hour.

Whether you enjoy a stroll by the sea, a stroll through the countryside, varied shopping, visitor attractions or a trip up the side of a cliff, Folkestone has it all. Aside from the harbour, the most recognisable landmark in Folkestone is the magnificent Leas - the cliffs above the beach. The ‘Martello Tower’ that stands on the cliff above Copt Point was built in 1806 as a defence against Napoleon, now houses a fascinating visitor centre. The surrounding Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers a host of outdoor activities and nearby Brockhill Country Park, has footpaths that take in the picturesque scenery around a lake and valley.
