The port and seaside town of Felixstowe lies on the North Sea coast in the county of Suffolk, at the end of a peninsula between the estuaries of the River Orwell and Deben. The history here is long despite the fact that most of the town dates from the early 20th century. Felixstowe is the place of the last invasion of England in 1667, when the Dutch were repelled. By the late 19th century this small village became a resort destination after a visit from the Empress of Germany in 1891. The press in Europe covered the visit that was to last for three weeks in the South Beach Mansion and the upper classes were impressed; a holiday destination was born.
With an attractive main promenade, lovely gardens, pier, cafes, shops, kiosks and beach, Felixstowe is the picture of a traditional English seaside resort. There are many local activities, amusements and a modern shopping centre as well as visitor attractions both in the town and along Suffolk’s superb heritage coast.
