The town and port of Faversham in the county of Kent is an ancient sea port and one of England's most charming and historic market towns. Located between the rural beauty of the rolling Downs and the sweeping flatlands of the Marshes, Faversham is popular with visitors. Its history though is very much entwined with gunpowder and was considered the heart of the UK’s explosives industry. It was in the 16th century that the first gunpowder plant was established when it was discovered that the town was well-placed for the industry. With a stream which could be dammed at intervals to provide power for watermills, along with easy access to a source for one of the key ingredients needed for gunpowder, charcoal; Faversham was ideal.
Faversham today offers an excellent choice of accommodation, attractions, dining and cultural activities for the visitor. For those wanting to explore the vivid past of Faversham, there are plenty of listed buildings, places of interest, country houses and gardens as well as the UK’s oldest brewery.
