Faringdon is an English market town in the Vale of White Horse, which was transferred to Oxfordshire from Berkshire in 1974. It occupies an attractive and convenient location on the edge of the Thames Valley, between the River Thames and the ancient Ridgeway National Trail. Faringdon Sponge Gravel, is a rare geological feature of the town, of Cretaceous fossil sponges, that also contain fossils of other invertebrates, as well as a few vertebrate bones and teeth.
Folly Hill or Faringdon Hill, is located to the south-east of the tow. It is a Greensand outcrop, which along with Badbury Hill on the other side of the town, features an ancient ditched defensive ring, or hill fort that was once used by supporters of Matilda during the Anarchy of 1135–1141 against King Stephen, who subsequently razed the fort to the ground. It was fortified once more by Oliver Cromwell against a Royalist garrison at Faringdon House. The folly on the hill gives panoramic views of the Vale of White Horse.
