The coastal town of Falmouth is also one of the largest ports in the scenic county of Cornwall; lying on the River Fal and with one of the biggest and deepest natural harbours in the world. The geography of Falmouth has brought a rich maritime heritage evident in the architecture, legends and tales of coastal defence against enemies throughout history. In 1836 the HMS Beagle anchored at Falmouth after completing its famous survey voyage round the world, with Charles Darwin aboard and Captain Robert Fitzroy at the helm. The Falmouth Docks were developed around the middle of the 19th century, bringing increased prosperity and development that was soon followed by further growth with the coming of the railways.
Today’s visitors to Falmouth come for the fine sandy beaches, beautiful gardens, lovely walks, golf, dolphin spotting, castles and delights of activities on the water. This pretty town with its palm tree-lined streets offers plenty to see, do and enjoy with excellent amenities and a broad range of shops, a vast choice of restaurants and pubs and lots of historic, cultural and visitor attractions. Every October, Falmouth fills with seafood lovers who come for the famous Falmouth Oyster Festival.
