Etchingham

The charming village of Etchingham in the county of East Sussex, is set in a valley at the junction of the Rivers Dudwell, Limden and Rother as they make their way through Sussex and onto the sea at Rye. Once an Anglo Saxon settlement, Etchingham was a manor long before the Norman conquest of 1066. Historic buildings like the 14^th century church, originally built within the grounds of the old manor come with their own folklore and legend. It is said that a great bell is at the bottom of the moat that once surrounded the church and manor; and that it would only be revealed when ‘six yoke of white oxen’ were brought to drag it up. The moat has long since gone, centuries have passed and still, no bell has surfaced.

Today’s visitor to Etchingham can enjoy good amenities, stunning scenery, friendly pubs, eateries, cultural attractions, historic sites and shops, including the famous Etchingham Stores that has been here since the late 19^th century. In the past, the Stores were a post office and home to the village’s first telephone exchange until catastrophe struck in the flooding of the village in October 2000 when the store closed down. Community spirit was stirred and the village residents got together to purchase shares in the newly-formed Etchingham Community Shop Association Ltd. The shop finally re-opened on 14^th June 2003, bringing crowds of well-wishers and halting traffic.
