Erith lies on the River Thames in the London Borough of Bexley with a history tied to its position on the river. Henry VIII founded part of his naval dockyard at Erith and this was where his famous warship, Henri Grace à Dieu was fitted out in 1515. The location of Erith was again important when the town enjoyed a brief spell as a riverside resort in the mid 19th century, with a pier and accompanying hotel hosting day-trippers who came on Thames pleasure boats or via the railway that arrived in 1849. Industry was drawn to Erith with its docks and proximity to the open sea as well as central London. The Victorian period saw entrepreneurs William Anderson and Charles Beadle make the town into one of the most important industrial areas in the south-east of England.
The town of Erith offers plenty of shopping and amenities, a choice of eateries and pubs as well as parks and open spaces including the delights of the river. With a pier and riverside walks, gardens and beautiful scenery, the riverside is an oasis enjoyed by visitors and residents alike.
