Epping is a small market town in the county of Essex that is surrounded by countryside and farmland; bordering the ancient Epping Forest. The town became a resting place for travellers and a popular spot for the highwayman Dick Turpin. Epping has many very old buildings that contribute to the beauty of the town and the market that started in 1253, still takes place here every Monday. For those with an interest in culinary history, sadly the famous Epping Butter is no longer made here; however, the equally well-known Epping Sausages are still available and made by Church's Butchers as they have since 1888.
Apart from the market, shopping is also available at a variety of independent shops and high street retailers in the town centre. There is plenty to do in and around Epping with sports centres, cinemas, leisure centre, eateries, pubs and of course, the delights of the magnificent Epping Forest. The forest provides picturesque walks and has a long history of its own; Epping Forest was once a popular hunting ground for the King's of England. The District Council's office is a fascinating piece of architecture with the old Gothic water tower at the southern end, built in 1872 and St John's Church tower in the centre, built in 1889.
