Enfield

Enfield Town is an urban area in the London Borough of Enfield, in North London. It is situated 10 miles to the north-east of Charing Cross. It originated as a string of small settlements in the royal hunting grounds of Enfield Chase. It later developed a traditional village green and marketplace, which is still used.

The royal Palace of Enfield once stood where the Palace Gardens Shopping Centre is now located and was once the home of Elizabeth I and Edward VI while Henry VIII was dying. It is in this location that Edward was formally told of his ascension to the throne. Although the palace is gone, the town still features a number of listed houses dating from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, on what is known as Gentleman's Row, one of which features a carved stone fireplace from the palace.

Enfield is also the location where poet John Keats was educated, at Clarke's School, which is where he began a translation of the Aeneid; and the site of the world's first ever cash machine (ATM).
