Emsworth

The small coastal town of Emsworth in the county of Hampshire nestles at the north end of Chichester harbour and started out as a small Saxon village. The early settlement grew and by 1239 Emsworth was granted the right to hold a market; with the Middle Ages seeing Emsworth become a small but busy port that retained its fishing but was also dealing in the trade of wines from Europe. Shipbuilding became a key industry here by the 18th century and the town thrived with additional work and income generated by the timber trade and the grinding of flour at the tidal mills that was then shipped to London and Portsmouth.

Elmsworth may be a small town but it offers an excellent choice of pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops and amenities as well as historic sites and attractions in the area. Pretty narrow streets, fine Georgian houses, walled gardens and a mill pond make Emsworth a pleasure to stroll around and the coast provides the opportunity to get out on the water pleasure boating. The best place to begin to discover the story of Emsworth is at the Emsworth Museum in North Street with exhibits revealing the life and work of the people who have inhabited Emsworth through the ages.
