Empingham

The village of Empingham in the county of Leicestershire, nearby the dam of Rutland Water and with a history that includes the 1470 Battle of Empingham was that was part of the Wars of the Roses. The battle site was in the woodland that is now called Bloody Oaks. Evidence suggests that there has been a settlement here since at least the Iron Age and later, the village is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as having around 100 families. Up until 1924, Empingham was owned by the Ancaster estate until debt and taxes forced its sale. The history of the village is evident in its varied architecture and wide Main Street with thatched houses as well as examples of houses built by the Ancaster estate in the 19th century.

Empingham has quiet lanes, public footpaths and an abundance of beautiful scenery in the surrounding area. There are ample amenities and village shops as well as a historic pub, the White Horse. A stone built inn that was originally a 17th century court house, it retains its character and is where visitors head for refreshment.
