Elton Matlock

Elton is an a popular tourist village in the English Peak District National Park. It is one of the more central villages in Derbyshire, near the towns of Bakewell and Matlock. It has no shops, just a small post office, a café, a church, a school and a sports field, but is famous for its location and its pub, The Duke of York, which is a very popular stop-point for walkers enjoying the various local routes. The pub is notable for its 1940s interior and is open on Sunday afternoons, when it is at its busiest, though there is no Sunday bus service.

The village is prettily situated on a hillside overlooking Robin Hoods stride on the division between the gritstone and limestone rock, which characterises the buildings and walls of the village. The Limestone way passes to the east of the village, and Elton's position on the convergence of so many footpaths makes it a popular location for hikers and cyclists, many of whom meet every year at the local café. There is a good choice of holiday accommodation to suit various tastes and budgets in and around the village, which is conveniently situated to provide easy access to a large number of local attractions, making Elton an excellent vantage point from which to enjoy a break in England's beautiful Peak District National Park.
