If you didn't know already, you would be right to resume that the town of Eccles in Greater Manchester was the place of origin of the Eccles cake. The traditional pastry was first produced and sold in the town in 1793. The ever-popular treat is now exported across the world.
Nearby Monton Green and Ellesmere Park are designated conservation areas, and a Site of Biological Importance is located near Rutland Road and Chatsworth Road. There have been a number of pre-historic finds in the area including dugout boats discovered at neighbouring Barton-upon-Irwell, along with an arrowhead, a spear, and axes, which all seem to suggest that a hunting and travelling community used the area. Chat Moss is also a very interesting archaeological site demonstrating that humans may have inhabited the area as far back as 6000 BC.
The place is certainly a very pleasant and interesting area to visit and offers and excellent vantage point from which to explore the wider area of the north west of England, with transport links to a broad range of attractions including several theme parks such as the Blackpool Pleasure Beach, national parks like the Forest of Bowland, and a number of historical houses.
