Durisdeer

Durisdeer is a small and pleasant village in the council area of Dumfries and Galloway, in south-west Scotland. It is situated 6 miles away from Thornhill, overlooking the Carron Water, which is a tributary of the Nith, and a popular fishing location.

A village is thought to have existed at the site since the Roman period, as a Roman Road once passed through where the current village stands, which was a direct route fron Nithsdale to Clydesdale. The well-preserved remains of a small Roman fort can still be seen about a mile away, along the Well Path.

Queensberry Aisle, in the village, is the burial place of the dukes of Queensberry, and houses a large marble monument to the second Duke and his duchess, which was carved by sculptor Jan van Nost.
