Durham

Durham City, in County Durham, is in the North East of England; just South of Newcastle and North of Middlesbrough, between the River Tyne and the River Tees. The city is small enough to enjoy on foot yet so exceptional that its castle and cathedral are designated a World Heritage Site. Durham is a city of contrasts, where the nostalgic Victorian Markets nestles happily alongside chic bistros and designer label boutiques. The cobbled market place is part of a wonderful pedestrianised area where buskers and street entertainment form a backdrop for a relaxed shopping or dining experience. The monthly Farmers' Market is a recently revived tradition that makes fresh local specialities available to all, with a variety of produce on offer. Durham City is also a regular prize winner with stunning floral displays adorning every available space.

County Durham is arguably one of the most beautiful counties in England. Taking in the majestic Pennine Hills as well as the limestone cliffs of the dramatic North Sea coastline. Durham also affords the opportunity to spread out and enjoy the pleasures that surround it; Northumbria, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and the Scottish Borders. An excellent base for tourers. From this position, for centuries, the powerful Bishops of Durham ruled the County Palatine as a virtually independent state. They had their own army, nobility, courts and coinage; leaving behind a fascinating legacy which can still be traced and sensed today.

Much of the West of this County, including Teesdale, Weardale and the Derwent Valley, is included in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is perfect country for walking, cycling, riding, wildlife-watching and exploring the many charming villages and towns. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways to enjoy, including the Pennine Way National Trail and C2C National Cycle Route. Derwent and other reservoirs offer opportunities for sailing, fishing, canoeing and even water-skiing.

Getting to Durham couldn't be easier, with excellent rail and road links as well as easy access from Newcastle and Teesside airports, both served by regular domestic and international flights. Arriving by car, the A1/A1(M) motorway provides fast easy access from the South. From the North, the A1 coastal route or the A68 cross-country "holiday route" through Northumberland and Border Country are available. From the West, the A66 provides a scenic cross-Pennine route from the Lake District and the M6 motorway, so you can start enjoying Durham even whilst travelling. The train too is an easy option with around 16 high speed electric trains daily from London to Durham, covering the journey in about 2½ to 3 hours.
