Dumbarton

Dumbarton is a burgh town and the administrative centre for the council area of West Dunbartonshire, in the west of Scotland. It is situated on the bank of the River Clyde, near the Clyde estuary. The town was a Royal burgh between 1222 and 1975 and was once the capital settlement of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde. Dumbarton Castle, overlooks the town from the top of Dumbarton Rock.

The town was once a significant ship-building town and afterwards a producer of whiskey, where the popular Ballantine's Whisky is made. Today Dumbarton is a popular commuter town for the emblematic Scottish City of Glasgow, which is located only 13 miles to the east-southeast. Dumbarton is also known for its annual Royal Scottish Pipe Band Championships, which is an international event that brings thousands of visitors to the town each year.

Popular attractions in the area include the Denny Ship Model Experiment Tank, Finlaystone Country Estate, Geilston Garden, Hill House, Weaver's Cottage, Clydebuilt Scottish Maritime Museum, and Fossil Grove, to name just a handful.
