An ancient Saxon town, Downham Market is in the county of Norfolk in a picturesque spot on the River Great Ouse, at the edge of the Fens. Downham Market is one of Norfolk’s oldest market towns and was an agricultural centre with produce from the Fens sold here; with the aid of a bridge across the Ouse. The town also hosted a notable horse fair that started in the 19th century, the St. Winnold's Fayre annually on St. Winnold's Day. This was one of the largest horse fairs in the country and dealing would take place in the streets as well as on the Howdale. The town sign depicts the crown and arrows of St. Edmund with horses to show the importance of the horse fair in Downham Market’s history.
As the gateway to the Fens, Downham Market is amidst the network of waterways that offer the visitor and abundance of things to see do and enjoy. The town has ample amenities, shopping, a choice of eateries and pubs as well as historic sites, cultural and visitor attractions.
