Dorking

The birthplace of Sir Lawrence Olivier, Dorking is a historic market town at the foot of the North Downs in Surrey, just 25 miles south of London. It developed as a minor staging post on a Roman Road that linked London to Chichester. This occupation of the town was made obsolete with the arrival of the railway, but it became a commuter town and home of the wealthy, thus developing a very attractive townscape. The town is situated just north of the River Mole, which is set in a steep-sided valley of the North Downs. Denbies Vineyard, the largest in the UK, is located on one bank, while Box Hill, Britain's first country park, is on the other. This is a designated Site of Special Scientific interest due to the rare orchids that grow in the valley in the summer.
