Doncaster is a significant large town in South Yorkshire, England, by the River Don. This modern and vibrant town is built on the site of the 1st century Roman fort of "Caer Daun" (later, "Danum"), from which the modern name is derived to include the Anglo-Saxon suffix of "caster" that distinguished the town as a military settlement. It was the main land route between Lincoln and York, which avoided the River Humber.
Doncaster has an international airport, boasts excellent transport links, amenities, retail centres, and attractions — making this a particularly popular holiday destination, from which to enjoy the best of South Yorkshire. The town features a large undercover and outdoor market that has been held in its current location since the 13th century. Attractions in and around the town include Conisbrough Castle; the Aeroventure Aircraft Museum; Astrabound — the biggest indoor play centre in South Yorkshire for children aged 0-12 years old; Markham Grange Steam Museum, which includes a garden centre and café; The Dome — one of the UK's top 5 Sports and Leisure attractions; the Yorkshire Wildlife Park; and the Trolley Bus Museum at Sandtoft. Doncaster is also pleasantly located among a knot of attractive and historically fascinating villages, which are all within easy reach of the town and are very popular among visitors.
