The market town of Dolgellau in Gwynedd, Wales lies at the foot of the Cader Idris mountain range in south Snowdonia on the River Wnion, a tributary of the River Mawddach. One way to access Dolgellau is across the early 17th century, seven-arched bridge ‘Y Bont Fawr’ which spans the river. The town is steeped in history and it was here that Owain Glyndwr held the last Welsh Parliament in 1404. Dolgellau experienced major growth as a result of its location at the heart of county's woollen industry which reached its peak around 1800. The river was used to transport the wool to the port of Barmouth from where it was shipped all around the world. Printing too was a key industry here in the 19th century and it was in this area that the Welsh gold rush of the same century was centred; with the panning equipment supplied by T.H. Roberts Ironmongers.
Dolgellau is a pretty town with narrow streets linking together the various town squares and historic architecture in many of the buildings. St. Mary's Church here dates back to 1716 and the site it occupies has been the location of a church since at least the 12th century. Dolgellau offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs and is a popular destination for visitors touring Snowdonia. Each July, Dolgellau hosts an annual folk and rock music festival called ‘Sesiwn Fawr’ that attracts thousands of music lovers.
