The thriving market town of Dereham in the county of Norfolk is set amidst picturesque farmland and has a rich agricultural history. The town was established as a religious centre by Withburga, the daughter of a Saxon King. Originally the town was called East Dereham and was a place of pilgrimage with a monastery that was established by Withburga in the 7th century; reputedly after having a vision of the Virgin Mary. The 16th and 17th centuries saw tragedy as fires swept the town, with only some of Dereham's ancient buildings having survived. Bishop Bonner's Cottage, of the notorious 'Bloody Bonner' who persecuted heretics, is now the local history museum and the destination if you want to explore the history of the area.
Dereham is popular locally for the shopping and amenities that serve visitors, residents and those from smaller nearby towns and villages. The market continues to thrive and is held on Tuesdays and Fridays in the centre of town. Dereham also boasts a local swimming pool, squash club, golf course, cinema and numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants.
