The seaside town of Dartmouth in the attractive county of Devon lies on the estuary of the River Dart, directly across from the smaller twin of Kingswear. Dartmouth was once a deep-water port of huge importance for large vessels and was the sailing point for the Crusades of the 13th century. The Royal Navy were based here under Edward III and the port was sealed every night with a great chain to prevent attack. Two castles protect the narrow mouth of the Dart, one for each town; Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle. The maritime heritage continues today as Dartmouth is home to the Britannia Royal Naval College where all officers of the Royal Navy are trained.
Dartmouth seems relatively untouched by time with narrow streets and historic sites including the 17th century Butterwalk which featured on television in The Onedin Line; the ancient harbour and of course Dartmouth Castle overlooking the Dart. The history and heritage of Dartmouth can be explored at the museum housed in the 1905 Britannia Royal Naval College. There is a great choice of shopping, lots of lovely places to dine and drink and so much to do, with visitor attractions and activities both on and off the water.
