Dalston

The large village of Dalston falls within the City of Carlisle district in the picturesque county of Cumbria. This area has a rich history, once occupied by the Romans and then the Danes and later, the warrior Scots invaded on a regular basis; leading to the construction of fortified structures known as Pele Towers. The area experienced prosperity with the advent of the cotton and flax industries. Dalston is on the River Caldew and at its heart is the red sandstone church of St. Michael, in the village square. With a graveyard containing the graves of two bishops of Carlisle and a chancel that dates from the 13th century, the church today is also a product of rebuilding in 1750 and restoration in 1850.

Dalston and the surrounding areas have plenty of amenities and shops, pubs, restaurants and eateries as well as historic sites and cultural attractions; including Dalston Hall’s Pele Tower that was built around 1500. Various additions and extensions were made and by 1897, extensive renovation was needed. The end result was a magnificent mansion that is today now a popular hotel.
