Dalkeith

Dalkeith is an historic market town on the River North Esk in Midlothian, Scotland. It developed in the 12th century around the original Dalkeith Castle, which was destroyed and subsequently rebuilt in the 16th century. The castle and town became a base for Cromwell’s army in 1650, from which Commander General Monck governed the country. The town then developed one of Scotland's largest markets on its unusually broad High Street.

The town has several historic landmarks. The Collegiate Church of St Nicholas Buccleuch is of medieval origin and is the resting place of the 1st Earl of Morton, Sir James Douglas, and his wife Joanna, the daughter of King James I. They are buried in the choir of the church, with stone effigies to mark their tomb. The town's 18th century Tolbooth is another interesting building, which features a former a prison, a court room, and an underground dungeon known as the ‘black hole’. A circle of stones in the front of the building marks the location of the last public hanging in Dalkeith.

Today the town is the main administrative centre for Midlothian, and offers a good range of shops, pubs and holiday accommodation, making Dalkeith an excellent place from which to explore all the sites and attractions of this famous region of Scotland.
