Dalbeattie

Dalbeattie is an attractive town in the Scottish county of Dumfries and Galloway, with conveniently close proximity to the historic towns of Castle Douglas and Dumfries, and to the Solway Coast, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its name derives from a Gaelic phrase meaning "Valley of the Birch Trees", because of its scenic location in the Urr valley, the eastern side of which is covered by forest. The town is characterised by a predominance of buildings constructed from the distinctive grey granite that is mined from the local quarries. Dalbeattie is also notable as the home town of William McMaster Murdoch — First Officer of the RMS Titanic. The town is now largely a commuter settlement, and so has excellent transport links, good shopping prospects, and caters well for tourists, since its location makes it a very popular place to visit.
