Croston

Croston is a village in Lancashire, England that is prettily situated on the bank of the River Yarrow between Chorley and Southport. The village green hosts the annual "May Day Madness and Bastille Day" celebration every 14th of July. A festival has been held on this green since 1283, when Edward I granted a charter permitting an annual medieval fair and market.

Croston was founded in the 7th century when Saint Aidan reached the settlements and a cross was erected in the village as a place of worship, which is how Croston got its name. Croston village is the only place bearing it the name in the United Kingdom. Ancient maps also indicate that a castle once occupied the area, which is believed to have been a timber structure as no evidence has been found of any stone.

There is a 15th century cobbled pack horse bridge which crosses the River Yarrow, which, like much of the area, is a very popular visiting spot for walkers.
