The town of Crewkerne in Somerset lies on the River Parrett, close by the border with Dorset and is home to Millwater, a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1989. Millwater at Crewkerne is a wonderfully diverse landscape of pasture, wet grassland, tall-herb fen, standing and running water as well as Alder and Willow carr. The flora, fauna and wildlife attract visitors with an interest in rare species, bird watchers who can discover 76 species here and walkers for the sheer delight of the varied scenery. Once a royal manor, Crewkerne has been settled since before Norman times, developing in the late mediaeval period through the growth of the textile industry and later with sail making. Evidence of the history of Crewkerne can still be seen in the architecture of many of the buildings here including the 15th century Church of St. Bartholomew that dominates the town as well as Georgian town houses and old stone cottages.
Crewkerne offers visitors plenty of excellent shopping, amenities, eateries and pubs to enjoy along with an abundance of delights to explore in the area. As well as the marvellous Millwater site, another ecological place of interest is the Bincombe Beeches Local Nature Reserve with its line of beech trees, some as old as 200 years. The entire area surrounding Crewkerne is a pleasure for those who enjoy nature and there are many walks and outdoor activities to explore.
