Crewe

The large, historic town of Crewe in the county of Cheshire is famous for its vast railway junction. The modern day settlement of Crewe grew rapidly beside the bustling railway station that opened in 1837 and was finally, formally planned out in 1843 by Joseph Lockeround. The town was enriched with good amenities, including Christ Church, Victoria Park, a gas works, public baths and a cheese market. The rich railway history of Crewe is best discovered at the Crewe Heritage Centre. Based on the LMS Yard for Crewe Railway Station, enthusiasts and visitors come to view visiting locomotives and the many exhibits at the Centre that explore the history of both the railway industry and other aspects of life here in days gone by.

Today Crewe has all that you would expect to find in a large, modern town with a great choice of restaurants, pubs, nightlife, cultural attractions and good shopping. Visitor attractions too are plentiful; as well as the excellent Crewe Heritage Centre, a visit to the magnificent Edwardian Lyceum Theatre that was built in 1911 is well worth the time and so too is Crewe Hall, built in 1615 for Sir Ralph Crewe. This magnificent Jacobean mansion is now a luxury hotel and restaurant.
