Crawley is a well-linked modern town in West Sussex, England, within the London commuter belt. Gatwick Airport is located on the edge of the town, the opening of which in the 1940s prompted Crawley to be redesigned as a New Town to house much of the workload and population of London. The area is known to have been inhabited since the Stone Age, eventually becoming a Roman ironworking settlement. The Crawley Museum in Goffs Park displays a number of the Stone Age and Bronze Age artefacts that were discovered in the area.
Notable attractions of the area include Arundel Castle, Goodwood House, Earnley Butterflies and Gardens, and The Observatory Science Centre. Crawley is also very convenient for visits to the other popular towns and cities of the region, including Brighton, Hove and Chichester.
