Consett

Consett is a town located in County Durham, high on the edge of the Pennines. It grew from a village community to become a thriving boom town with the discovery of  iron ore deposits in the vicinity of nearby Shotley. The Consett Iron and Steel works built here in 1837 was an industrial giant that had iron interests in Germany and Spain. The Works dominated the local skyline until their closure in 1980. Consett was also the first town in the world to have a Salvation Army Corps Band. The band was formed in December 1879 and started the tradition of playing in the streets at Christmas. The original band consisted of just four players, bandmaster Edward Lennox and bandsmen George Storey, James Simpson and Robert Greenwood.

Consett is a welcoming town with good local amenities and from its position, high on the steep eastern bank of the River Derwent, it offers the visitor the opportunity to make the most of the gorgeous Northumberland countryside.
