Coniston

Coniston is a village in the famous tourist county of Cumbria, in North-West England. It enjoys a beautiful location at the head of Coniston Water, the third longest lake in the Lake District National Park, which is overlooked by the Coniston Old Man fell. This is the southern part of the Lake District bordering the county of Lancashire and not far from Barrow-in-Furness.

Coniston Water is said to be one of the most beautiful, and is generally admired by way of the regular ferry service, which also transports visitors to the various locations of its shore. The lake is notable as the location where Donald Campbell died breaking the world water speed record in 1967, and so the life and achievements of the man are celebrated in a wing of the John Ruskin Museum, which displays the boat, which was finally recovered in the year 2000.

Coniston Village is a popular destination for hill-walkers and rock-climbing parties, as there are a great number of scenic walks in the area, including several routes over the Furness Fells and Grizedale Forest. There are a number of hotels and two Youth Hostels in the village to accommodate the high volume of pack packers who visit to explore the mountains of the region, along with a good choice of hotels, self-catering cottages, and bed & breakfasts, which provide a comfortable base from which to enjoy this beautiful region of the country.
