Congleton is a small market town in the county of Cheshire that lies on the banks of the River Dane, within reach of the Cheshire Plain, Peak District, Lake District, Welsh mountains and coast. Congleton has long been a settlement as evidenced by Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts found here and held at the Congleton Museum. By 1272 it had grown enough to warrant a market and King Edward I granted permission to build a mill here. The textile industry fuelled prosperity in Congleton and it became an important centre for the manufacture of lace and leather gloves.
There are ample amenities, plenty of shops, pubs, restaurants, historic sites and cultural attractions as well as a wealth of visitor attraction including; the Little Moreton Hall, a magnificent timber-framed moated house; Jodrell Bank, the largest movable radio telescope in the world; Lyme Park, a Tudor house transformed by Venetian architect Leoni into an Italianate palace; Capesthorne Hall an 18th century Jacobean-style Hall set in 100 acres of picturesque Cheshire parkland. For those with a passion for outdoor activities, there are lovely walks and cycle routes as well as facilities for golf and fishing within the surrounding countryside.
