Coleford is a small town in the diverse county of Gloucestershire, a scenic county that includes the Cotswolds, the Royal Forest of Dean and the Severn Vale. One of the oldest towns in the Forest of Dean, Coleford has a long history that includes coal mining from the 19th century. When the coal industry declined in the 1950’s, the mines here closed too but this long-established town survived. Georgian architecture sets Coleford apart from its near neighbours and many of the building pre-date even the Georgian era. There is interesting architecture in the old coaching inn that is now the Angel pub, with its large arched entrance and in the town’s clock tower at the heart of Coleford where a church once stood. The clock tower used to be part of a church when it was built in 1821 but the small church was demolished 60 years later and a new church sited on the hillside.
From its picturesque location in the Forest of Dean, Coleford is a popular destination for visitors looking for opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and beautiful scenery. Bird watchers, walkers and cyclists as well as those simply looking for the serenity and diversity of the Forest of Dean are a regular site in Coleford; with its ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs as well as historic sites and nearby attractions.
