Coatbridge

The town of Coatbridge in Lanarkshire, Scotland lies close to Glasgow and has been settled since as far back as the Stone Age. The area remained sparsely settled and it wasn’t until around the 12^th century when growth and development came and Coatbridge was the site of Newbattle Abbey. By the end of the 18^th century the town was thriving as a result of the Industrial Revolution and went on to become one of the most important centres in Scotland for iron works and coal mining up until the 1920’s when the Great Depression saw the demise of this thriving industry. One of the best places to explore the diverse history of Coatbridge and the surrounding area is at what is known as "Scotland's Noisiest Museum", Summerlee Heritage Park. With an astounding collection that offers true insights into the past; Summerlee has a row of early 20^th century cottages, a real coal mine and a working tram line as well as the remains of one of Coatbridge's historic blast furnaces.

Coatbridge today offers ample amenities, eateries, shops and pubs as well as historic sites and leisure facilities, including; the popular Drumpellier Country Park that was established in 1919. Drumpellier Country Park is a vast expanse of 500 acres with a wonderful variety of wildlife, flora, fauna and habitats with parts designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Two lochs, lowland heath, mixed woodlands and open grassland along with the Monklands Canal, attract both visitors and a large number of water birds, small wild animals and many types of fungi.
