Coalville is a market town in the county of Leicestershire that has its roots in the coal mining industry that has been here since medieval times. Evidence of the mine workings from the distant past can be discovered on the Hough Mill site at Swannington where a life-sized horse gin has been built and craters, where medieval villagers dug, can still be seen. The fascinating history and heritage of the area and its coal mining, transport and engineering can be explored at the disused colliery at Snibston that is now a museum; the Snibston Discovery Park. When the railways came in the 19th century, Coalville was on an important route between Burton and Leicester. The parish church, Christ Church was also built in the 19th century and houses a brass memorial plaque to the victims of the tragic Whitwick Colliery Disaster of 1898 that took the lives of 35 men.
Coalville has a traditional town centre with amenities, pubs, clubs, eateries, independent and specialist shops as well as an indoor market. The vibrant Coalville market continues every Friday and Saturday and there is even a smaller market held here on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well. Visitors will find plenty to enjoy in the area with cultural, historic and visitor attractions ad well as wonderful countryside offering opportunities to enjoy outdoor pursuits and scenic walks.
