Arguably the most geographically central town in Britain, Clitheroe is situated in the scenic Ribble Valley, which is famous for it's stone-built houses and traditional atmosphere. The town is a very popular tourist destination due to its pleasantness and convenient location by the southern edge of the Forest of Bowland, which is historically a royal hunting ground and bears the name 'forest' in the obsolete sense of the word to suit that purpose.
The town has a very extensive range of shops that will satisfy even the most avid shopper, along with countless cafés and traditional pubs — many of which feature on the Good Pub Guide. Clitheroe Castle is also a popular draw for visitors to the area and is believed to be the smallest Norman keep in the whole of England. It is one of the oldest buildings in Lancaster and is built on top of a 35 metre heigh outcrop of limestone. It is also the only remaining castle in England which housed a royalist garrison during the English Civil War.
Clitheroe also has an active musical community and is home to some long-established Jazz and Blues clubs who in April 2010 organised the first Ribble Valley Jazz Festival for over 40 years. Clitheroe also hosted an annual Spring festival since 1997.
With so much beauty and plenty to do and see, Clitheroe is certainly one of the North's more popular destinations for those seeking a traditional English retreat.
