Cleator Moor is an attractive small town in the English county of Cumbria on the edge of the Lake District National Park. Its heritage in the iron mining industry affords it very good transport links, giving ease of access to all of the sites and attractions of Cumbria, while retaining a more tranquil atmosphere than the heavily tourist-centric towns within the Lake District itself.
The town is also a very popular visiting place for hikers, as it is overlooked by the Dent Fell — the first and the lowest of the mountains on Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk, which spans the whole of the North of England. The low incline of the Dent Fell also makes it a very enjoyable destination for more casual walkers, who are rewarded on reaching the top with uninterrupted views of the Cumbrian coast and the Ravenglass Estuary right across to the Isle of Man, with the Sca Fells behind. It is traditional for walkers to contribute to the pile of rocks at the summit, which resembles a burial cairn, but is in fact a compensatory measure for the Fell being only a few metres short of being a true mountain.
