Cleator is an attractive old village on the River Ehen in the famous tourist county of Cumbria in England, home of the Lake District National Park. The village of Cleator neighbours the newer town of Cleator Moor, of which it is the parent settlement, Cleator Moor being named after the moor above the village. Whitehaven is also a close neighbour of the village.
Cleator is situated at the edge of the Lake District, nearest Ennerdale Water, with views of the Dent Fell to the south-east. The village is on the route of Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk, making it a popular rest-stop for the brave few who attempt the challenge, as well as for those undertaking just a portion of it before continuing their break in the beauty and tranquillity of the lakes.
