Clacton-on-Sea epitomises British seaside resorts with its carnival atmosphere, endless amusements and activities, beautifully kept gardens alongside the sea and a promenade offering all the delights you could expect. Clacton is the largest and most southerly of the resorts on the Essex Sunshine Coast and the one most steeped in nostalgia. At Clacton-on-Sea you will find over seven miles of clean sandy beaches, with a promenade that stretches from Frinton in the north to Jaywick in the south.
As Clacton-on-Sea faces south, the weather offers much more sunshine than other resorts, bringing wonderful, hot summers. The council here is well aware of the importance of tourism and works hard to maintain exceptional levels of cleanliness, safety and features that attract many different types of tourism. Tendring's Clacton Beach has been awarded Yellow Flag Status and Best Beach in East Anglia by the Seaside Award scheme. South of Clacton is Jaywick Sands - arguably the finest natural beaches on the Essex Sunshine Coast. The beaches here are an ideal spot for a seaside picnic, bathing and where children can play safely.
Along the Promenade are beautifully kept, formal gardens that add to the attractiveness of the front and allow for leisurely strolls in the sunshine. The charming Victorian Pier, which is free to enter is a delight too that takes visitors back in time. On the pier, you can find amusements such dodgem's and all the fun of the fair as well as places to fish, watch the free fireworks events, dine and sun bathe. Clacton Pier was one of the first buildings to be built in the new town of Clacton-on-Sea, by Peter Schuyler Bruff. He was an engineer and the manager of the Eastern Union Railway. It opened in July 1877.
Shopping, dining, entertainment and fun for all the family are what makes Clacton-on-Sea an excellent holiday destination. There is plenty to see and do and no day need be wasted. The cliff top public gardens are well worth a visit as are the wide range of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues near the town centre and seafront. The oldest part of the town is Great Clacton, with shops, pubs and restaurants overlooked by the imposing and beautiful 12th Century Parish Church.
