The large market town of Cirencester in the county of Gloucestershire along the River Churn was referred to in ancient times as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’. Although little is left of the Roman settlement, a large grassed-over amphitheatre remains as testament to the importance of Cirencester, when it was one of the regional capitals of Roman Britain. The fascinating past of this town can be uncovered at the award winning Corinium Museum, well-known for its extensive Roman collection.
The town centre is still a bustling place with good shopping, including the Cirencester Charter Market that was started in 1086. Every Monday and Friday the market brings a vibrant atmosphere to the town centre with fresh local produce and crafts. There is plenty to enjoy here with historic sites and visitor attractions as well as lovely parks including; the large parish church of St John Baptist that is known as the 'Cathedral of the Cotswolds'; the Abbey Grounds, with a portion of ancient Roman Wall, a bandstand that is regularly used in the summer and a lake and St. Michael’s Park too with wonderful facilities.
