Churchtown

Churchtown is actually a suburb of the seaside town of Southport in Merseyside and is a village that has three Churches to justify its name. St Cuthbert's Church on St Cuthberts Road, the Churchtown United Reformed Church on Botanic Road and the Marshside Road Methodist Church. Churchtown has a lovely village feel, with friendly locals and attractive architecture. Back in 1575 the cargo from a shipwreck off the Churchtown coast, brought ashore potatoes and led to Churchtown becoming the first place in England where they were grown.

The heart of the old village remains much as it was in its past, with the focal point being the village green in front of St Cuthbert's Church. A preservation order covers much of the Botanic Road, ensuring the survival of the charming thatched cottages. With a choice of pubs and village shops, Churchtown is a pretty place for visitors with an interest in religious history and village life in England.
