Chislehurst is a suburb located in South East London, with its name being derived from the Saxon words for ‘gravel’ and ‘wooden hill’ which are ‘cisel and ‘hyrst’ or ‘ciselhyrst’.
The area is most famous for the Chislehurst Caves which are believed to be ancient. The caves consist of a maze of underground tunnels, running deep under Chislehurst. The caves have been constructed over around 8000 years by the numerous inhabitants that have lived in this settlement.
The caves were extended by the Romans and Saxons and now stretch to over 20 miles of different passageways and tunnels. In World War I the caves were used as an ammunition storage base, with a small railway being produced to speed up the transportation of goods and supplies through the tunnels.
The tunnels attract many visitors every year and are definitely a must see for all tourists visiting the area.
