Chippenham is an attractive and fairly rural market town in the English county of Wiltshire, near to the spa town of Bath. It was established at a crossing point of the River Avon, in a pre-Roman period. It was once the location of the royal hunting lodge of Alfred the Great, with a scenic woodland and countryside setting between the Marlborough Downs to the east, the Cotswolds to the north and west and Salisbury Plain to the south. The 60 acre Bird's Marsh woodland, located to the north of the town, is popular with walkers, and a protected wildlife habitat.
