The cathedral city of Chichester in the county of West Sussex has been a cathedral city since 1075; when the Normans built the cathedral with its majestic spire that is such a striking landmark as it towers above the Sussex plain. The history here dates back to Roman times when a settlement was established along with a Roman Palace at nearby Fishbourne. Surrounding Chichester are the City Walls with their circular bastions, once used to throw stones with catapults. There is a fabulous walk around the walls that tells the story of how they came to be and some of the drama that has played out about them.
Chichester has a good range of amenities, shops, pubs and eateries and a wealth of historic buildings and sites of interest, as well as cultural attractions. At the heart of the city, where the four main streets meet, is the Tudor Market Cross that has stood here since 1501. The museums in the 18th century corn-store and the 13th century priory, give a further taste of the past and insights into the rich heritage of Chichester, a truly fine cathedral city.
