Chepstow

Best know for its spectacular views and for the magnificent Chepstow Castle overlooking the River Wye, the town of Chepstow, or "Cas-gwent" to the Welsh, is inarguably one of the most popular tourist destinations in Wales. The town is situated on the boundary of Wales in the county of Monmouthshire, with neighbours Tutshill and Sedbury on the opposite bank of the Wye being English. As well as for its beauty and historic grandeur, Chepstow is an enjoyable holiday destination due to its large shopping high street, with a range of shops, pubs and restaurants and more than 16 hotels to choose from. Chepstow Racecourse is host to the Welsh Grand National.

Chepstow Castle is most the oldest surviving stone castle in Britain. William the Conqueror ordered his master builder, William fitzOsbern to construct it only one year after the Norman invasion of Britain, in 1067, on a cliff between a crossing point on the River Wye and a defensively beneficial limestone gorge. The building of the castle was the founding action of the town, as there were no significant settlements at the location prior to its construction. The town wall, or "Port Wall", was built near the turn of the 13th century, when Chepstow gained the right to a weekly market and annual fair, and is still mostly intact. The Town Gate, however, is a 16th century reconstruction.
